(Al Jazeera) Qatar: Deal reached with Israel and Hamas to bring aid into Gaza

  • The Qatari Foreign Ministry said the deal, arranged in cooperation with France, will see medicine and other humanitarian aid delivered to civilians in “the most affected and vulnerable areas” of Gaza in exchange for the delivery of medication to Israeli captives held in Gaza.
  • The ministry’s spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, said that the medication and aid would leave Doha on Wednesday to Egypt, before being transported into Gaza.

(Guardian) Russian professor arrested in Estonia on espionage charges

  • Viacheslav Morozov, a professor of international political theory at the University of Tartu was detained on 3 January by Estonia’s internal security service (ISS), public broadcaster ERR said
  • A veteran professor who had previously taught Russian-EU studies at the university, Morozov was well known for his research into Russian political identity and foreign policy. He had condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine but had called on others not to “burn bridges” with Russians opposed to the invasion
  • Tartu University, the country’s leading academic institution, quickly sought to cut ties with the accused professor. The university rector, Toomas Asser, said he “unequivocally denounced any action that could endanger the security of our country” and that Morozov’s employment had been terminated

(Deutsche Welle) French court rules Lafarge can be probed over Syria crimes

  • Lafarge allegedly paid millions to militants like the so-called "Islamic State" group in order to keep running its operations in Syria during the civil war. The company faces legal battles in France and the US.
  • France's highest court ruled on Tuesday that cement maker Lafarge could be held liable for complicity in crimes against humanity in Syria.
  • In the US, Lafarge pleaded guilty to charges that it paid millions to the so-called "Islamic State" group and Nusra Front

  • Saudi Arabia's foreign minister said on Tuesday the kingdom could recognise Israel if a comprehensive agreement were reached that included statehood for the Palestinians
  • Securing a normalisation deal with Saudi Arabia would be the grand prize for Israel after it established diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco, and could transform the geopolitics of the Middle East
  • there would be some delay in the U.S.-backed talks on normalisation of Saudi-Israel ties, which is seen as a key step for the kingdom to secure what it considers the real prize of a U.S. defence pact in exchange

  • The Iraqi government recalled its ambassador to Tehran and summoned Iran’s chargĂ© d’affaires in Baghdad to the Foreign Ministry after at least eight ballistic missiles launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck overnight in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region

  • The U.S. military carried out a new strike in Yemen on Tuesday against anti-ship ballistic missiles in a Houthi-controlled part of the country as a missile struck a Greek-owned vessel in the Red Sea
  • A Malta-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier was struck by a missile while northbound in the Red Sea 76 nautical miles northwest of the Yemeni port of Saleef, a security firm and two Greek shipping ministry sources said
